Bruce Lee’s method: intercept, absorb what is useful, discard what is not — a process, not a frozen style.

What Is Jeet Kune Do?
Jeet Kune Do — “the way of the intercepting fist” — is the name Bruce Lee gave to his martial research. He wanted a method that could intercept an attack, keep what worked from any art, and refuse to fossilize into a style with a frozen syllabus.
After Lee’s death, different teaching lines preserved different slices: Jun Fan kickboxing, trapping, and a more philosophical “JKD concept.” This hub names the method. It does not pick a successor church.
How Jeet Kune Do Works
The intercepting punch and stop-hit idea come in part from fencing and from Lee’s reading of Western boxing. Close-range hands show Wing Chun DNA. Footwork and broken rhythm borrow from boxing and, later, from whatever the student could prove.
In practice a JKD room should look like pressure-tested stand-up with a small, honest toolkit — not a museum of every art Lee ever mentioned.
Absorb, discard
Lee’s notebooks cite wing chun, boxing, fencing, and more. The method’s own rule is to keep only what you can use. Martial Index keeps those source hubs separate so the citations stay checkable.

FAQ
Questions we hear on the mats, in gyms, and when fighters compare styles.
Is JKD a style?
Lee argued it should not become one. Some schools still teach a recognizable Jun Fan syllabus. Both facts can be true; they are in tension.
Do I need Wing Chun first?
Helpful for the trapping chapter, not required. Many JKD rooms start with kickboxing structure.
Is JKD MMA?
No. MMA is a sport ruleset. JKD is a method. They can inform each other; they are not the same page.
The Bottom Line
Jeet Kune Do is a method for intercepting and editing your toolkit. The source arts — wing chun, boxing, fencing — have their own hubs when you want the ingredients.
