What Is Catch Wrestling?
Catch-as-catch-can wrestling grew from Lancashire catch and the American professional circuit of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The brief is simple: take the person down, pin them, or submit them with hooks, neck cranks, and joint locks.
Unlike Olympic folkstyle or freestyle, catch treats submissions as first-class finishes. Unlike sport BJJ, it still cares deeply about the pin and about riding the top.
How Catch Wrestling Works
Exchanges chain takedowns into rides. From top, catch wrestlers hunt hooks — grapevines and body triangles — and finish with neck cranks, double-wrist locks (kimura cousins), toe holds, and straddles. Bottom play is escape and reversal more than a specialized guard game.
The professional carnival and catch circuit prized toughness and improvisation. That culture still flavors gyms that teach “catch” as a no-gi submission method beside wrestling and BJJ.
Lineage and neighbors
Catch fed pro wrestling’s hold vocabulary and later mixed with judo and BJJ in no-gi rooms. Names such as Farmer Burns and Frank Gotch belong to the fighter catalog still to be written.

FAQ
Questions we hear on the mats, in gyms, and when fighters compare styles.
Is catch the same as pro wrestling?
Historical catch is a fighting art. Modern pro wrestling is athletic theater that inherited catch holds and slang. Some coaches still teach catch as a live submission method.
How is it different from BJJ?
Catch wants pins and top pressure; sport BJJ often wants prolonged ground fighting and a wider guard meta. Overlap is large. Incentives differ.
Does catch allow chokes?
Lineages vary. Many catch rooms finish with neck cranks and chokes; some older rulesets emphasized pins. Read the gym’s rules, not a single myth.
The Bottom Line
Catch wrestling is the pin-and-submission ancestor sitting beside folkstyle and BJJ. This hub is the live intro; the hold-by-hold catalog is still ahead.
