What Is Sambo?
Sambo (an acronym from the Russian for “self-defense without weapons”) is a grappling art and combat sport assembled in the Soviet Union from judo, folk wrestling, and jacket styles. Athletes wear a kurtka — a short, belted jacket — with shorts and often wrestling shoes.

How Sambo Works
Standing exchanges hunt high-amplitude throws and trips. On the ground, pins score and submissions finish — including ankle locks and other lower-body attacks that many judo and IBJJF-style BJJ rulesets restrict.

Is sambo just judo with leg locks?
No. They share a jacket and many throws, but sambo’s shorts, shoes, pin rules, and legal lower-body submissions create a different sport. Judo’s gi and IJF incentives are their own game.

Does sambo use guard like BJJ?
