What Is Kickboxing?

Kickboxing is a combat sport in which athletes strike with padded gloves and kicks under a ring or cage ruleset. It is not one tradition: Japanese kickboxing, American full-contact, Dutch-style low-kick games, and K-1-type formats share a name and not always a rulebook.

What they share is gloved hands plus kicks, and a scoring culture built on visible damage, ringcraft, and combinations rather than a long plum clinch.

How Kickboxing Works

Range is boxed with a jab and managed with kicks — low kicks in Dutch and many Japanese rules, high kicks in full-contact formats that restrict the thigh. Defense includes checking kicks, which boxing never had to teach.

Compared with Muay Thai, many kickboxing rulesets limit or ban elbows and long clinch knees. Compared with savate, most kickboxers do not wear shoes as weapons.

Rulesets you will hear

K-1-style and Glory-type rules sit in the modern mainstream. American full-contact (often above-the-waist kicks) and older Japanese kickboxing each keep their own flavor. Always read the promotion’s fouls before you treat “kickboxing” as a single technique list.

FAQ

Questions we hear on the mats, in gyms, and when fighters compare styles.

Is kickboxing just Muay Thai without elbows?

Sometimes that is how a gym markets a class. Historically they are different sports with different scoring. Some kickboxing rulesets do look like “Thai minus clinch.” Others do not.

Does kickboxing include takedowns?

Most ring kickboxing does not. MMA kickboxing is a stand-up layer inside a grappling ruleset — see MMA.

Where do the kicks come from?

Japanese kickboxing mixed karate and boxing. Dutch gyms absorbed Muay Thai low kicks. Kyokushin knockdown culture also feeds the body-kick habit.

The Bottom Line

Kickboxing is the gloved kick-and-punch sport of Martial Index. Pair it with boxing for hands and Muay Thai when elbows and clinch come back into the conversation.
