What Is Savate?
Savate, or boxe française, is a French martial sport: gloved punches plus kicks delivered in specialized shoes. Nineteenth-century street and salle culture — sailors, streets, and later sporting clubs — produced an art that wanted both elegance and a working kick.
Modern sport savate uses an assault (light) and a combat (power) register. Ranks are often marked by glove colors, with silver and gold as high technical grades.
How Savate Works
The shoe lets athletes kick with the point and the edge in ways a bare shin does not. High, long kicks and mobile footwork sit next to boxing hands. Clinch is more of a reset than a Muay Thai scoring position.

Boots, not folklore only
Savate absorbed English boxing and kept the shoe. Chausson and older southern kicking stories sit in the history still to be written as fighter and gym pages.
