What Is Lethwei?

Lethwei is a Burmese striking art and combat sport. Fighters go bare-knuckle (often with tape) and may use punches, kicks, elbows, knees, and headbutts. That last tool is the sentence everyone remembers — and it is not a gimmick. It changes how the clinch is used.

Traditional prize fights in Myanmar sometimes treated a lack of knockout as a draw, with a recovery ritual after a knockdown. International promotions have tried versions of that custom and versions of a judges’ decision. Always read the card’s rules.

Stand-up looks related to Muay Thai: teeps, round kicks, elbows, knees. The bare fist and the legal headbutt change the pocket. Clinch becomes a place to smash as well as knee.

In traditional and many modern lethwei rules, yes. That is the point of the art’s public identity. Amateur or exhibition rules may differ.

Why the draws?

Older custom: if nobody is finished, the bout can be a draw. Some modern cards keep a version of that; others use judges.

Should I train lethwei or Muay Thai first?

Muay Thai gyms are far more common outside Myanmar. Lethwei is specialized. Start where the coaching is qualified.
