What Is Taekwondo?

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art and Olympic combat sport built around kicking, with punches, blocks, and forms (poomsae / tul) completing the syllabus. It was organized in the mid-twentieth century from Korean striking practice and, in part, karate influence.

World Taekwondo (WT) sport — electronic hogus, head-kick scoring — is the television face. International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) and various traditional kwans keep different patterns, sine-wave theory, and contact rules.

How Taekwondo Works

The sport meta rewards speed, chambered kicks, and turning techniques to the head and body. Hands exist; in some rulesets they score less. Traditional classes still drill forms and self-defense that do not look like an Olympic final.

Distance is long compared with wing chun or boxing’s pocket. That is a feature of the kicking art, not a bug — until the fight becomes MMA, where a taekwondo entry needs a sprawl.

Sport and traditional under one roof

One name covers Olympic athletes, ITF pattern people, and neighborhood dojangs. When Martial Index says “taekwondo,” it means the family. When a page later says WT or ITF, it will mean those rules.

FAQ

Questions we hear on the mats, in gyms, and when fighters compare styles.

WT vs ITF — which should I join?

WT is the Olympic sport path. ITF is a separate syllabus and pattern set. Visit both if you can; they do not substitute for each other.

Is it only kicks?

No. Hands, blocks, and self-defense appear in most syllabi. Sport scoring just makes the kicks famous.

Does taekwondo help in MMA?

The kicking toolkit transfers. Takedown defense and pocket boxing have to be added. See MMA.

The Bottom Line

Taekwondo is the Korean kicking family on Martial Index: sport and traditional under one roof. Pair it with karate for the shared striking history and hapkido for Korean locks.
